Cyprus Launches Online Residence Permit Renewal Service for Third Country Nationals

As of July 6, 2026, the Migration Department of the Republic of Cyprus has launched a new digital service allowing third country nationals to submit renewal applications for selected residence permit categories online. The service, called “Renewal of residence permits for Third Country Nationals,” is available through the gov.cy portal.

Why It Matters

According to the official announcement, the launch is part of Cyprus’s broader digital transformation agenda. The goal is to reduce bureaucracy, speed up interactions between citizens, businesses and public authorities, and make the residence permit renewal process more transparent and predictable.

Previously, renewing a residence permit required an in-person visit to the Migration Department or to the district unit of the Aliens and Immigration Service. Now, a significant part of that process can be completed online.

Which Categories Are Covered

At this stage, the digital service covers the following categories:

• Temporary residence permits for Remunerated Employment
• Temporary residence permits for Domestic Employment
• Residence permits for employees of Companies of Foreign Interests (CFI)
• Long-Term Resident status
• Temporary residence permits for Family Reunification — an important nuance: this category applies specifically to family members of Long-Term Residents and employees of Companies of Foreign Interests, not to family reunification in a general sense

It’s worth noting that the service is intended exclusively for renewals of existing residence permits. First-time applications are not processed through this platform.

Who Can Submit an Application

A renewal application can be submitted by:

• the permit holder (employee) themselves;
• the employer, on behalf of the employee;
• an authorised representative (an organisation, a law firm, or another natural or legal person) acting under a valid authorisation.

Eligibility Criteria for Companies of Foreign Interests Employees

For the Companies of Foreign Interests category, the official service page specifies the following eligibility conditions:

• the current residence permit expires in 90 days or less, and the application must be submitted no later than 30 days before expiry;
• the applicant continues to work for the same company that issued the current permit.

Other categories (Remunerated Employment, Domestic Employment, Long-Term Residents, Family Reunification) each have their own specific submission conditions, which should be checked individually depending on the applicant’s situation.

Accessing the Service

To use the service, applicants need a verified CY Login profile — Cyprus’s unified electronic identification system.

An In-Person Visit Is Still Required

Despite the shift online, applicants cannot avoid visiting the Migration Department entirely. The collection of biometric data (photograph and fingerprints) and the applicant’s signature remains a mandatory in-person step and is not replaced by the digital service.
