The EU Blue Card is a type of residence permit that enables highly qualified professionals from outside the European Union to work and live in most EU member states (with the exceptions of Denmark and Ireland). EU Blue Card was created to address the shortage of skilled workers in certain industries and provides a streamlined process for highly skilled professionals and their families to relocate to the EU.

Benefits of the EU Blue Card:

  • The right to work: Holders of the EU Blue Card can work in any EU country and compete with locals. In Cyprus, for example, the minimum salary threshold for applicants ranges from 1 to 1.6 of the average national salary (20,000 to 32,000 euros annually), depending on the applicant’s qualifications.
  • Family reunification: Immediate family members can join the Main Applicant in their new EU residence.
  • Freedom of movement: EU Blue Card holders have the freedom to travel without a visa in EU countries and can move to another EU country to work after living in Cyprus for 12 months.
  • Social benefits: EU Blue Card holders enjoy access to educational resources, social security, and other services on an equal footing with local residents.

Requirements for obtaining the EU Blue Card in Cyprus:

  • Employment contract: A valid job offer or employment contract for at least six months must be provided.
  • Salary: The salary must meet the national threshold (see above).
  • Applicant’s education and experience: Higher education or at least 3 years of relevant professional experience obtained in the last seven years must be provided.
  • Medical insurance: Valid medical insurance must be available.

Details on how to get the “magic” EU Blue Card can be obtained from our company experts. However, it is important to note that on August 1st, 2024, a new amendment to the Law on Foreigners and Immigration was published in the Official Gazette of the Republic of Cyprus, bringing the concept of the EU Blue Card into national legislation. This amendment aligns Cyprus’s laws with the EU Directive (EU) 2021/1883, which introduces the EU Blue Card.
